Members choose new name for organization

For a number of years, the Alaska Press Women’s Board of Directors discussed the pros and cons of changing the organization’s name to better reflect its varied membership, which includes both women and men who are communicators in many fields. These discussions were in response to several member requests to address the issue.

This year the Board put the decision to a vote, providing four options to members on the 2006 ballot. Choices included keeping Alaska Press Women, or choosing another name: Alaska Professional Communicators, Alaska Media Professionals, or Alaska Professional Writers.

Voters overwhelmingly chose to change the name to Alaska Professional Communicators. The new name became official at the annual meeting, held June 2, 2006.

Over the next several months, board members will work to implement the name change on the web site, in member materials, and with an announcement to the media and the National Federation of Press Women.

New Board of Directors elected

Members approved a new Board of Directors in the 2006 election. Elected board members for 2006-2007 include:

President: Diane Walters
1st Vice President: Connie Huff
2nd Vice President: vacant
3rd Vice President: Rhonda McBride
Treasurer: Sherrie Simmonds
Secretary: Pat Richardson

Bylaw changes approved

Several changes to the Alaska Press Women bylaws were approved in the 2006 election, including:

  • Changed Article V, “Election of Officers,” to reflect that calls for board nominations, publication of election process and election results will be posted on the Alaska Press Women web site, rather than the Arcticulation newsletter (which no longer exists).
  • Changed Article XI, “Amendments,” as follows: “These bylaws may be amended at the annual meeting by a two-thirds vote of all votes cast; or at a meeting especially called for the purpose, with notice given 30 days prior, with a two-thirds vote of all votes cast.
  • Currently both “Amendments” and “Disposal of Funds” are labeled as “Article XI.” Changed the “Disposal of Funds” label to “Article XII” to fix an error in how sections were numbered.
  • Added Article XIII, “Voting,” to read: “All voting by membership in both regular and special meetings may be done by e-mail, fax, U.S. mail or in person at a meeting called for that purpose. All absentee votes must be received by the day prior to the meeting to count. On issues involving multiple choices, members voting by e-mail, fax or U.S. mail may rank their preferences to be counted in case no one answer receives two-thirds of the votes cast in the first voting.”
